Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - “Gem”, as he was more popularly known by his friends, was an American civilian who was interned in Camp Holmes just outside Baguio. He edited the camps’ newspaper, "Camp Holmes Daily News," when its editor, James J. Halsema, was taken out of the camp for interrogation and torture in Baguio (as a result of internee Herb Swick’s escape). This unpublished volume is composed of Hungerford’s diary, focusing on the last months of occupation, liberation in Bilibid, the Battle of Manila as he saw it, and conditions in Manila immediately after. It also contains post-liberation letters to his brother which described his experiences during and just after the war. The manuscript and letters were discovered after Gem’s death and were published by his brother, Charlie “Chuck” W. Hungerford. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
