Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - This book is a compilation of essays, personal experiences, excerpts from diaries and interviews, and articles by persons who experienced the war in the Ilocos, or were prominent Ilocanos (like Josefa Llanes Escoda). Introductory and linking material is provided by the authors/editors, who also conducted many of the interviews. The book highlights the experiences of the civilians – unarmed members of the guerrilla became known as Bolomen – in the region. It also focuses on a number of key incidents and individuals, such as the landing of provisions from the submarine USS Stingray, the massacre by certain guerrilla elements of civilians in the town of Bangui, Roque Ablan (mayor of Ilocos Norte at the start of the war and organizer of one of the first guerrilla resistance movements behind Japanese lines), Captain Jose V. Valera (a Filipino-American who led a commando team who landed on the Stingray), Josefa Llanes Escoda, and Lt. Charles “Chick” E. Parsons (US Navy liaison officer with MacArthur’s headquarters, who organized the submarine missions to the Philippines), Silver Guillermo (guerrilla leader) and Eishiro Baba (a local Japanese who turned out to be a Japanese officer). - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
