Summary, Etc.
  • Summary, etc. - Personal account of Japan's top surviving fighter ace, with a total number of 64 kills to his credit. As an experienced Zero fighter pilot of the Imperial Japanese Navy, Sakai had his baptism of fire in China, where he shot down his first enemy aircraft. With the outbreak of the Pacific War, Sakai and his unit attacked Clark air base on the first day of the war, destroying some of the bombers on the ground. He later shot down the B-17 of Capt. Colin Kelly, who became the US' first hero of the air. His squadron moved to the south as soon as air cover was secured, and saw action in the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia today) and the South Pacific. Wounded grievously in an encounter with American dive bombers, he returned to base under grueling conditions. - Prof. Ricardo T. Jose
