General Note
  • General note - Originally named Calilingo after the river along which its first settlement was established, the town of Bato was founded on February 15, 1713. Prior to this date, it was a mere visita established by the friars of Nabua. In 1753, the parish was canonically erected and annexed to it were three barrios belonging to nearby towns: Ogbon of Iriga, Agos of Nabua, and Hagarambo of Polangui. The Franciscan friar, Manuel Torralba, became the first curate of the newly established parish. In 1784 the first concrete church was built and dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Church shown in photo is a reconstruction done in 1936. Folk tradition has it that once a native was asked by some Spaniards who were new to the town how the place was called. Misunderstanding the querry and believing that he was being asked what he was doing (he was seated on a huge rock), he blurted out: "bato", which means "rock". Since then Calilingo came to be known as Bato. YYY
