General Note
  • General note - The present church of Badian is a reconstruction of that built in 1825. The town used to be under the parish of Samboan. The first attempt to organize it into a separate municipality was made in 1791 with the appointment of Alonso Budyawe as first head man of the town. In 1821, Rev. Fernandez, O.S.A., became the first capitan municipal, while Rev. Cipriano Abad Agustin became the first parish priest. The name Badian was derived from a plant called "badyang" which used to be abundant there. In October, 1906, Tranquilino Agravante became municipal president, the first during the American regime. Badian was the scene of fighting between the guerrillas and the Japanese during World War II. The Imperial Army raided Manay-as, a seacoast barrio, on August 17, 1944, and caused tremendous damage to the municipality. The resistance movement in southern Cebu took shape in this town. Sgts. Gregorio Sungcad, Geronimo Dacillo and others organized the nucleus of the movement. This unit was later incorporated into southern Cebu guerrilla force under Major Marciano Jakosalem and later under Major Marciano Calderon with headquarters at Dumanjug, Cebu. YYY
