- General note - Santo Nino Basilica painting of the Augustinian scholar, Esteban Marin. A native of Mexico City, where he joined the order, he came to the Philippines in 1584. He was sent to Zambales, where he founded the villages of Bolinao and Masinloc, and ministered those in Batac, Laoag, Tagudin and Bantay, He was killed by the Igorots in November 1601, having been sent where with a punitive expedition (under the command of Mateo de Aranda) by Governor Francisco Tello. He left a manuscript grammar and dictionary of the Igorot language, a grammar of the Zambal and several sermons in Zambal. (also see CH00455) YYY
