General Note
  • General note - This church, made of coral blocks and in the Romanesque style of architecture, was constructed in 1886 as attested by the date cut on the stone of the main portal. The town was named after a town in northwestern Spain. Its patron saint is Saint James, the apostle. Compostela was at one time a barrio of Danao. In 1903, it came under the jurisdiction of Liloan. It was separated from Liloan in 1918 and officially made a separate municipality. This was done by Hilario Kanen through Speaker Sergio OsmeƱa of the Philippine Assembly and Gov. Manuel Roa. Thus Compostela became a municipality on Jan.17, 1919. During World War II, a pitched battle took place here between a big group of the Japanese soldiers and a guerrilla force led by Major Fabian Sanchez, on the hills of Guila-guila and Tubigan. The guerrillas were forced to retreat, but only after inflicting heavy casualties on the Japanese who, in retaliation, burned almost all the houses in Compostela along the national road, from the barrio of Magay to the poblacion and who, much later, massacred hundreds of its inhabitants. The presence of a big contingent of Japanese troops compelled the U.S.Army to station in Compostela the 77th Division until the Japanese surrender in 1945. YYY
