General Note
  • General note - Dalaguete, 85.14 kms. south of Cebu City, was ones a barrio of the municipality of Carcar. It was organized as a separate town and parish in 1711, after its people under the leadership of Cogo, chief of the barrio of Tupan, and Manoktok, chief of the barrio of Obong, succeeded in building a common church between the two villages at the place called Unab, which soon became the center of trade and social life of the people. The name Dalaguete (pronounced with the last "e" silent) is derived from the balete tree, locally called "Dalikit", which then grew abundantly in Unab. The first parish priest was a Spaniard, Rev. Manuel Cordero, 1798-1799. During the Revolution of 1896-1898, Dalaguete was one of the centers of revolts. On Holy Wednesday of that year, 1898, insurgents assaulted the town and occupied the town hall. They burned all the important papers of the local Spanish government. On the following Monday, the Spanish transport, Don Juan de Austria, anchored at Dalaguete and landed troops. Many rebels were captured and imprisoned and several were executed. The rest fled to the mountains. The execution of several rebels angered the people. Under the leadership of Rev. Ruperto Sarmiento and Placido Osorio, volunteer guards were organized and armed with 18 rifles, 20 revolvers, 17 pieces of light artillery, 500 spears, and 500 swords. They dug in on the hillside facing the town 1 km. away. When they were ready to attack the Spanish force, American troops arrived, and the rebels were persuaded to disband. Those who refused joined the Filipino troops at Sudlon, Toledo City, and fought the Americans until Sudlon fell. During World War II, the Japanese stationed a garrison here. The town was badly hit during the American saturation bombings. YYY
