| General Note |
- General note - The first church was started in 1601 and finished in 1636. In 1922, it was badly damaged by strong earthquakes and repaired gradually. The repairs were completed in 1936 under Father Manuel Yap, then parish priest and now Archbishop of Negros Occidental. It was again damaged during the Japanese occupation and restored after liberation. Records show that the town dates back to the days of the arrival of the Spaniards. Pigafetta wrote that Mandaue was one of the villages of Cebu when Magellan landed on that island. He said the place was ruled by a chief called Apanoan. Buzeta and Bravo also mention in their book "Diccionario", (1850-1851), that Mandaue was one of the important villages in Cebu under the Jesuits. The name Mandaue is derived from "mamtawi", a vine that grew abundantly there in olden days. This vine can rarely be found now, except in the barrios of Basak, Pak-naan, Labogon, and Kamboga-ong. YYY
