| General Note |
- General note - When the Spanish friars came to this town in 1829, they constructed the church at a place where there were plenty of trees called "naga", the local term for narra. Since witchcraft was common in the locality, the friars plastered the upper part of the church''s façade with suns, stars and angels to ward off evil spirits. Before the coming of the Spaniards, Naga, 22 kms. southwest of Cebu City, already existed as a cluster of settlements peopled by migrants from Cebu City, Talisay, Opon (now Lapulapu City), and Bohol who were attracted by its rich fishing grounds and tree barks used for coloring fish nets and clothes. The place of these trees was called Tinaan or the place for dyeing. The civil government in this town was established with Glicerio Canonigo as the first gobernadorcillo. When the Revolution of 1896 began, Spanish authorities required that rich families contribute ir200 each to put down rebellion. This was bitterly resented by people of all classes. As a result, many joined the rebellion led by Canonigo. YYY
