General Note
  • General note - The first church was constructed at barrio Pitalo. After repeated repairs, it was agreed that a new church be constructed on a land donated by Doña Clara Najarro at Taboan (market place), not far from the present town cemetery. The construction of this Gothic edifice started in 1875 and was finished in 1888. Because a church has always been an urban center if built near a market place, the areas surrounding it eventually grow to become the poblacion of the town. San Fernando lies 29 kms. southeast of Cebu City, along a narrow coastal plain facing Bohol. It was at one time a part of the municipality of Naga. Between 1854 and 1858, the barrios of Magsico, Cabatbatan, Balungag, Sangat, Panadtaran, and Pitalo moved to separate from Naga. The parent municipality objected to the separation on the ground that the soil of the petitioning barrios was poor and therefore could not sustain the agricultural needs of the people Juan Diong ordered all the members of his delegation to Cebu City to bring with them soil samples and farm products, and finally convinced the authorities of Cebu to recommend the creation of a separate municipality. By Royal Decree of 1858, the new town, with a parish priest of its own, was founded. It was named San Isidro Labrador. Later it was changed to San Fernando in honor of its parish priest, Fr. Fernando Sanchez, and the saint after whom he was named. YYY
