| General Note |
- General note - Due to frequent pirate raids, the Augustinians, together with the town authorities, planned the construction of a massive fortress-like church, to be built on top of a hill that offers a commanding view of the Miagao river. The result is the construction of this magnificent church in 1786, under the supervision of Fr. Francisco Gonzales Maximo. It has been declared a National Shrine, by virtue of a Presidential Decree, in 1973. In 1994, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. (Source: Angels in Stone, Fr.
