General Note
  • General note - Photo shows the marker installed upon completion of the reconstructed church in 1962. The present structure is the fourth church of Miagao. The first one, built in 1731 in sitio Ubos at the lower part of the town near the beach, was burned and looted by Muslim raiders. The second one, probably also of wood and built by Fray Bernardo Camporredondo three years later (1734), met the same fate. After this a stone church-fortress was built in 1787, at a new site in Tacas, a highland in the heart of the poblacion. Completed in 1797, the new church survived the revolution of 1898, a fire in 1910 (only the interior was badly damaged) and World War II. Serious damages were caused by the earthquake of 1948 and a total reconstruction was in order. Engr. Ofelio Simon, working under the supervision of Mons. Fernando S. Javillo, started the task in 1960. (also see CH00599) YYY
