General Note
  • General note - Detail of the right panel of the facade, showing the statue of Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire or Charles I of Spain. Son of Philip of Burgundy and Joanna, the Mad (daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain), Charles was the grandson of Emperor Maximilian I. He succeeded to the Netherlands kingdom in 1506 at the death of his father and 10 years later became practically king of the Spanish dominions at the death of his grandfather Ferdinand (his mother Joanna was mad). In 1520, at the age of 20, he was elected emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. During his reign he came into conflict with the Protestant princes, followers of Martin Luther, and at one time ordered the reactivation of the Spanish inquisition. He abdicated the crown in 1556 and died a couple of years later. King Philip II of Spain after whom the Philippines was named, was his son. (also see CH00599) YYY
