| General Note |
- General note - The niche on the left side of the facade bears the statue of Pope Leo X, whose real name was Giovanni de Medici. He was known for his generosity, mildness and courtesy. During his reign (1513-21), he tried to prevent any single ruler from wielding too much power in order to promote the independence of the Holy See. He opposed the election of Charles V as Emperor, but was overruled by the majority of the electors. (also see CH00599) YYY
