| Title |
- Title - Juan Serapio T. Nepomuceno: Wealthy Chinese mestizos in mid-19th century dress. Circa 1840.
|
| Notes |
- Notes - The man's baro is accented by a ruffled collar and embroidery on the bosom and cuffs. Accessories are a medallion and a stovepipe hat with a silk band. The woman's camisa, saya, and tapis are all in English cotton. A brooch secures her paƱuelo, and a plumed hat protects her from the sun. (Note: The is one of 12 lithographs reproduced by FHL in 2000 as a set of postcards highlighting 19th-century Philippine costumes. Caption, from Robert MacMicking's Recollections of Manila and the Philippines, 1851: "In the colours and patterns of their dresses the natives are great dandies; the women, as usual, being more particular in those affairs than the men. Very seldom, indeed, does a native Indian or mestiza beauty sport the same saya for two galas consecutively.")
