- Title - Juan Serapio T. Nepomuceno: Chinese mestizos. Circa 1840,
|
| General Note |
- General note - The woman's ensemble consists of an embroidered paƱuelo secured by a brooch, and a striped tapis and checkered saya both made of English cotton. A pieneta and a silk mantilla adorn her hair. The man's tunic has a lace-edged standing collar and long, narrow sleeves with upturned cuffs. A silk stovepipe hat and a parasol complete the outfit. (Note; This is one of 12 lithographs reproduced by FHL in 2000 as a set of postcards highlighting 19th-century Philippine costumes. Caption from Jean Mallat reads as follows: "When the Chinese mestizos go out, they are richly clothed and wear on their shirt brooches of pearls and diamonds...In saya and tapis. their wives display no less luxury in their dress than their husbands. In their hands they hold a rosary, and there are many of them who have renounced the Indio costume and dress in European style.")
