| General Note |
- General note - This is the oldest Catholic church in Cotabato, constructed in 1872 by the Jesuit missionaries. Long before the Spanish army tried to occupy the Cotabato area, the mission of Tamontaca was already flourishing. The Jesuits founded an industrial and agricultural orphanage, which was started with a small nucleus of young slaves whom the missionaries had redeemed from the Muslims with the aid of funds provided by the citizens of Manila. The boys were taught farming and other trades, the girls sewing and other household crafts. This institution occupied the very spot where the former Muslim Sultan of Tamontaca held his court. When the ex-slaves grew up and were married they were provided with a house and a piece of land. Today, one can notice the important effect of the evangelization of the natives from the dialect they speak. -- Chabacano. YYY
