|
| General Note |
- General note - Situated at the corner of Solana and Potenciana Streets in Intramuros, the Franciscan church was of a mixed architectural style: the interior was Romanesque while the facade had a sprinkling of Doric, Ionic and Corinthian pillars. The side walls were supported by Corinthian pillars. Marshal Gabriel de Rivera, known as the "protector of the Franciscans," built the first nipa-and-bamboo chapel in 1577. After its destruction by fire in 1583, he rebuilt it of wood and stone in 1586, In 1738, Fr. Sebastian de Totanes, Provincial of the Franciscans, ordered it demolished and changed, and by the 1750''s the new church was completed. Following the earthquakes of 1824 and 1839, subsequent reconstructions were made, the last one having been supervised by Fray Vicente Ingles. The church which honors St. Francis of Assisi as its patron saint was dedicated to Nuestra Senora de los Angeles. It was finally destroyed along with the other churches in Intramuros during the liberation in 1945. (See CH00751)
