|
| General Note |
- General note - Photo shows the church before the earthquake of 1880. The cornerstone of the church was laid in 1599 and its construction was completed in 1606 under the supervision of Augustinian Brother Antonio Herrera. During the British occupation in 1762, English Commander Draper ordered the floor of the church to be dug up, in search of buried treasure, thus profaning the graves of Legazpi, Urdaneta, Salcedo, de Goiti, Laverazes, and other Spanish conquistadors. Their ashes were later gathered and placed in the church''s easternmost chapel. (Source: Churches of Old Manila, O'' Reilly, 1940) YYY
