General Note
  • General note - A photoengraving of the facade of the Jesuit church in Intramuros. This church was one of the few in the Islands partly constructed of red brick and partly of adobe. The cornerstone was laid on February 9, 1878, and the two steeples were finished eleven years later in 1889. (Source: Churches in Old Manila, O''Reilly, 1940) The first Jesuit Church was built in 1596 by Fr. Antonio SedeƱo. After it was burned, it was reconstructed by Fr. Juan Antonio Campion in 1632. The third temple, dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, was erected on February 9, 1878 and finished in 1889. Don Felix Roxas designed it but it was Fr. Francisco Riera, S.J. who supervised its construction. The Graeco-Roman Renaissance structure, partly made of red brick and partly of adobe, was noted for its intricate carvings. Isabelo Tampingco, a Filipino, designed and executed most of church carvings. The pulpit was designed by Agustin Saez and executed by Crispulo Hocson who also carved the image of Our Lady of the Immaculate Concepcion. The group of angels forming the base of the pulpit was carved by Manuel Flores who also did the statue of the patron saint, St. Ignatius. The altar table with a carved replica of Da Vinci''s "Last Supper" was designed by Don Jose Fuentes and done by Francisco Rodoreda. Near the Church was the Ateneo de Municipal run by the Jesuits. This school was burned down during a conflagration on August 13, 1932. The Church, spared by the conflagration of 1932, was finally burned down during the liberation in 1945. YYY
