- Notes - Photo shows San Sebastian Church, located at Plaza del Carmen. This church of pure Gothic style is built entirely of metal, every inch of which was cast in Belgium by the Société Anonyme D'' Entreprises des Travaux Publics, and assembled here by the Recollect friars in 1890. (Source: Churches of Old Manila, O''Reilly, 1940) Erected on September 11, 1890, the Gothic San Sebastian Church resting on a raised platform was completed on August 16, 1891. Made of steel manufactured by the Societe Anonyme D''Entreprises des Travaux Publics, the materials were brought from Belgium separately and assembled in Manila. The church has two high steeples and tall Gothic pillars supporting the broad ceiling. Its pulpit, made of native wood and ornamented with carved figures of saints, was designed by Lorenzo Guerrero who also designed and executed the retablos and confessionals. Other carvings were done by Eulogio Garcia. The colored stained glass windows with designs representing the life of Christ were imported from Europe. The earliest chapel, made of nipa and bamboo, was built by Fray Rodrigo de San Miguel. Destruction wrought by the earthquakes prompted the Augustinian Recollects to erect a church made of durable materials. Fray Esteban Martinez proposed its construction in steel while Genaro Palacios drew the plans. It was Fray Gregorio Serma who accomplished the construction of the steel temple dedicated to Nuestra Senora del Carmen.
