Title Statement
  • Title - Santa Ana de Sapa Church, circa 1850
General Note
  • General note - In 1578, a church of nipa and bamboo was erected in this sitio by an estero running from the Pasig. Although the stone-church would only be completed in the first half of the 18th century, the Franciscan order was allowed to construct a more massive edifice as early as 1599, by virtue of a decree issued by the Superior-Gobierno. The construction of the church and its adjoining casa-parroquial was supervised by Fray Vicente Ingles. On September 12, 1720, Fray Francisco de la Cuesta, Archbishop of Manila, blessed the cornerstone and donated 4,000 pesos to the project. Venerated in the church is the image of Ntra. Sra. de los Desamparados which the builder Ingles had brought from Spain. Also, Huerta (Estado...1865) reported the presence of authentic relics of St. Anne which Governor Juan Jose de Obando had entrusted to the order. Sta. Ana de Sapa was founded by Franciscan missionaries (Fray Pedro de Alfaro, Fray Juan de Plasencia, Fray Diego de Oropesa and Fray Juan de Garrovillas) in 1578. Another Franciscan pioneer, Pro-to-martyr Fray Francisco de Santa Maria served as its first minister until Fray Pablo de Jesus took over in 1580. Engraving of the church in Santa Ana district, with a child''s funeral procession in the foreground.YYY
