General Note
  • General note - The Santa Ana Church, built by the Franciscans in 1578, was the first church established outside Intramuros. Dedicated to Santa Ana de Sapa, the first church was made of nipa and bamboo and later, in 1599, by virtue of government decree, a license was issued to construct it of stone. The present church, built in another place, was erected on September 12, 1720 under the supervision of Fr. Vicente Ingles. Its cornerstone was laid earlier by Rev. Fr. Francisco de la Cuesta, Archbishop of Manila and at the same time Governor-General of the Philippines. The earthquake of 1880 destroyed the Church and convent and was rebuilt later by Fr. Ramon Gaviedos. The Church venerates the image of Nuestra SeƱora de los Desamparados (Our Lady of the Abandoned) copied from the original in Valencia and brought here to the Philippines in 1719 by Fr. Ingles. The image of the real patron saint, Sta. Ana de Sapa, was donated by Governor Juan de Obando. (also see CH00797)
