| General Note |
- General note - Known as the Eucharistic site of the Philippines, where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration 24 hours a day, the Santa Cruz Church of Manila was originally made of wood and stone. It was erected by the Jesuits in the 17th century. Following the earthquake of 1863, the church was reconstructed in 1868 under the supervision of Fr. Agustin de Mendoza. Again, the church was destroyed during the second world war, and immediately after the war, a provisionary chapel was erected. Improvements were made later chiefly through the efforts of Father Lucio Garcia who had served as the parish priest since 1939. The present concrete temple was constructed in 1950 and completed by 1955. In 1957, the Blessed Sacrament order began administering the parish. Santa Cruz church venerates Our Lady of the Pillar whose image is a replica of the famous statue in Zaragosa, Spain. It was brought here by the Jesuits in about 1768. The statue, said to have been made in 1743, stands on a six-foot pillar. Her feast is celebrated annually on October 12. (also see CH00803)
