- General note - Photo shows the restored San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City. The original edifice made of coral stone was built by Recollect friar Mauricio Ferrero in 1876. The stones used in its construction were cut from the deposits of Guimaras and brought by barge and lorchas to Bacolod. Bishop Mariano Cuartero, O.P. blessed the church on January 19, 1882, the eve of the feast of San Sebastian. (Source: A Brief History of the Church in Negros Occidental, Modesto P. Sa-onoy, 1976) Fr. Mauricio Ferrero of the Recollect Order constructed this church, known as the San Sebastian Cathedral, in 1755. In the religious history of Negros, the Recollects were the most influential. The Christianization of the island was begun by the Augustinians followed by the Jesuits and later the Recollects. Fray Julian Gonzaga of Barcelona, Spain, was the first parish priest of Bacolod. His church was located at the top of the hill in the settlement believed to be where sitio Kamingawan is now situated. YYY
