| General Note |
- General note - Photo of the church built by Fr. Patricio Adell in 1882. Formerly Guimbalaon, the name of the city was derived from the tree known locally as cansilay which used to abound in the northern part of the town. Founded in 1780, the site of Silay was transferred from the old seat of Guinhalaran and later on to Estaca, between Pana-ogao and Matagoy rivers. As the population increased, the community expanded to the south side of the Pana-ogao river. The first gobernadorcillo was Tomas Quilangit. When insulted by a Spanish alferez, he killed him and was therefore executed. Late in 1898, Silay residents led by Nicolas Golez, Leandro Locsin Rama and Melecio Severino revolted against the Spanish government. A Filipino flag made by Olimpia Severino, Eutropia Yorac and Perpetua Severino, was raised in the town''s plaza, following the surrender of the Spanish guardia civiles. Silay was created a city on June 12, 1957. It was formally inaugurated by Pres. Carlos P. Garcia on August 24 of the same year. Like Bacolod, Silay''s chief product is sugar.YYY
