General Note
  • General note - In 1762 the Recollect order built the first nipa-and-bamboo chapel of Las Piñas, then a fishing town of Parañaque, Rizal. In 1765, upon the arrival of Father Diego de Cera del Carmen in this poor parish maintained by the Recollects without government support, the chapel was improved and enlarged, and two years later reconstructed of adobe stones. After 30 years, in 1827, the new stone church was finished. It was a simple Spanish monastic form typical of the barrio chapels at that time. Several calamities wrought havoc with this church. In 1847 lightning set practically the whole church on fire. In 1880 three earthquakes completely destroyed the belfry, arches and two side altars. Badly damaged too were the tile roofing and the convent. While the church was being reconstructed a provisional chapel of nipa and bamboo was built. Reconstruction was completed in 1883 but not before a strong typhoon damaged the roof anew in 1882. During the Revolution of 1896 the walls and the fence, used both as shelter and target of the opposing forces, were severely battered. Finally in 1962, with the help of the Historical Conservation Society, the parishioners reconstructed their church for good. Around P16,000 were spent in replacing the destroyed adobe walls and about P15,000 for painting the exterior. The Las Piñas church is famous for the unique bamboo organ made by Father Cera. Fronting the church at present (1969) is Saint Joseph''s Academy, a Catholic school for boys and girls.YYY
