| General Note |
- General note - Another photo of the church shows brickwork of the side walls and buttresses. The town''s original church, also made of stone, was built by the Jesuits at the original townsite. The Jesuits were the first missionaries of the town and came by way of Palapag which was one of the three earliest mission centers in Samar. They established the parish in 1649. Frequent Muslim raids destroyed the church and a few replacements were built at several locations following the settlement of each new townsite. In 1768, the Franciscans took over, built a wooden church in 1790 and then of hewn stone in 1804 under the supervision of Fray Jose Mata. Fray Agaton Martinez started the construction of the present church in 1838 as well as that of the wooden convent. YYY
