General Note
  • General note - After the Franciscans took over the religious missions of the Jesuits in 1768, the first Franciscan friar to Lauang, Fray Antonio de Toledo, directed the construction of a massive church-convento complex and dedicated it to St. Michael the Archangel. The strength of the building was no match to the fury of the frequent typhoons that plagued the province. In 1848, Fray Sebastian de Almonacid had the roofs restored and the walls reinforced. The church and the convent were gutted down in a ravenous fire that ate up the entire village. A new complex of rubble-work masonry was built in 1874. Fray Aquilino Majuelo supervised the painting and the decorating of the newly-constructed edifices in 1892. The present facade is a subdued version of the late nineteenth-century architecture. It features pairs of engaged columns mounted on common pedestals and niches which house statues of saints. The simplicity of the exterior adornments is an overt mark of a compromise between aesthetic and practical needs. To the right of the facade is the three-storey belltower and to the left is the semi-concrete convento. The interior of the church betrays the builders'' frustrated attempt at applying artistry. Columns and "haliques" are evenly distributed to adorn and support the roof. The "retablo" is consistent and simple and bears ornamental floral and leaf-forms.YYY
