General Note
  • General note - Paranas is a small plain lying at 11° 4' 45" latitude between two rivers on the eastern side of Samar. Confining the town are Mt. Cabalantian of Can-avid at the northeast, Taft at the southeast, Hinahagan at the south, San Sebastian at the southwest, the waters of Maqueda Bay at the west and Motiong at the northeast. When Miguel Lopez de Legaspi decided to distribute encomiendas to his loyal conquistadores in 1571, Paranas was given to Andres de Luca. In 1609, it formed a part of the territory administered by the Jesuit fathers in the Tina-gon residence but was embraced by Catbalogan in 1637. The Sumoroy rebellion was greatly felt in this town as the villagers stirred up by the victories of their Palapag neighbors took arms against the Spaniards in the same year. The administration of the town was turned over to the Franciscans in 1768. The Jesuits built a church in the village upon their arrival in 1609 and dedicated it to Sts. Peter and Paul but it was soon destroyed by a big fire. A second church was built in 1835 under the direction of Fray Leon de Tembleque. An adjoining convento, a casa tribunal and a schoolhouse were also constructed by the townfolks under the guidance of the same cleric. The newly-erected church got burned in 1851 and a third one, massive and spacious, was built in the same place. The rugged mountains that confine the town yield excellent timbers, a wild range of palm and rattan and fine wildlife. Abundant in its coasts is a great variety of fishes which includes sardines. The coastal waters, however, can only allow the anchorage of small ships and interisland vessels. YYY
