| General Note |
- General note - Siquijor was the first parish to be established on the island in 1783 under the administration of secular clergymen. In 1794, the Augustinian Recollects arrived and took over the mission. In the years that followed, the Recollect Fathers established the parishes of Larena (then called Can-oan), Lazi (Tigbawan), San Juan (Makalipay), and Maria (Cangmenia). Legend has it that the molave trees on the island attracted great swarms of fireflies, leading the Spaniards to call it "Isla del Fuego" or island of fire.
