| General Note |
- General note - Originally erected by a group of Augustinian friars in 1575, this church is the oldest in the province. The earlier administrators used hewn-stones and tiles to reinforce the edifice. As it was completed by various accretions, the church does not convey an integral impression. Fray Joaquin Martinez de Zuñiga, a historian-writer of note, commented on the structure in his capacity as former parish priest ..." The church is small and has a cross vault with a post in its center. This makes it very ugly. The tower is low and not well-shaped. The natives do not appreciate it because people from other towns tell them it looks like a pigeon-house. They have been continuously needling the various parish priests to construct a new tower for them, but such was the number of public works in their town that their wish could not be granted." In November 1896, the revolutionists who came from Marungco (Angat) entered the town and surrounded the church where the Spanish soldiers were stationed. Because of hunger after a siege of six days, the Spanish soldiers surrendered. Afterwards, the Filipino revolutionists preceded to San Rafael where they engaged in another fierce battle. From the accounts made by one Silvino Lopez, a veteran of the revolution, it was learned that the church was burned by the retreating Filipino troopers. In March 1899, while the American forces were still being delayed in Guiginto, General Antonio Luna ordered the burning of the church. Municipal president Cayetano Macapugay took charge of the burning while Lopez was made to demolish the tower with dynamites given by one Spaniard called Sosia.YYY
