General Note
  • General note - By virtue of a decree signed on April 21, Barrio Marilao was elevated to the status of town and separated from its matrix, Meycauayan. Fray Vicente de Talavera was appointed parish priest and administrator of the town. Marilao got its name from "madilaw," a straw-colored shrub which grew abundantly in the place. It is a 2440 hectare-plain lying at 14° 45'' latitude and bounded by Bocaue at the north, the mountains of San Mateo at the east, Meycauayan at the south and Bulacan at the northwest. A small river flowing from Mount Tubtub courses through the town and into the sea. By 1885, Marilao had no good roads that could connect it to the northern towns. Thus, the commuters had to take the bamboo rafts that plied the river. The church had already been erected and dedicated to San Miguel Archangel. About the town church were a stone convent, a cemetery, a primary school which also housed the "maestro," a wooden casa tribunal and 600 houses made of bamboo. A large portion of the town was part of a hacienda which supported the nuns of the Monastery of Sta. Clara. The hacienda was sold to the Cortez family by its former owners. After the long litigation, the people lost their case. The Cortez heirs sold the property to the residents later on the Spanish-English war of 1763. From these headquarters, Bustos and his men conducted raids against the English and pursued them up to the gates of Intramuros.YYY
