General Note
  • General note - Meycauayan town church (Saint Francis of Assisi Church). A church of bamboo and nipa was built by the Franciscans when they first settled in the town in 1578. After it was blown down by a typhoon in 1588, the Superior-Gobierno issued a decree dated 1599 providing for the erection of a stone church in the town. It was only built in 1668, after the town site was moved from Sitio Lagolo to its present location. Fray Nicolas Santiago started the construction of the edifice that measured "sesenta varas de largo por doce y media de ancho." The rectangular casa parroquial, referred to as the best convent of the Order by writer Joaquin Martinez de Zuñiga (Estadismo.... 1800) was constructed by Fray Francisco de San Antonio in 1731 and completed by Fray Miguel de San Bernardo and Fray Jose Tellez in 1739. In 1784, the wooden portions of the church were replaced with hewn-stones by Fray Jose Cantos. To the right of the facade is the bell tower put up by Fray Francisco Gascueña in 1800. The same religious built the stone arches that support the choir in 1804. Using his personal funds, Fray Balbino de Consuegra erected a sacristia with a spacious receiving room above it in 1850. The painting and the restoration of some deteriorating portions were supervised by Fray Benito de Madrilejos in 1851. The church-convent complex was destroyed by a strong typhoon in 1882. Subsequent repairs were made by the religious administrators. Though spared by the warring forces during the Second World War, the three-century old edifices were razed to the ground by a fire that hit the bustling poblacion on April 4, 1949. YYY
