General Note
  • General note - San Ildefonso, Bulacan. Due to the abundance of "kapok" trees growing on the hill where the town proper is presently located, the early inhabitants called this place "Bulak." The village was then a barrio of San Rafael but it soon became a part of Hacienda de San Juan de Dios when it was embraced by the 28,000 hectare-estate bought by the Order of San Juan de Dios in 1776. The friars exacted rentals with which they financed the operations of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Manila. Hacienda de San Juan de Dios was renamed Hacineda de Buenavista and much later became a property of the Archdiocese of Manila when the friars of the Order were recalled to Spain. The Augustinian mission which settled in Barrio Bulak by way of San Rafael erected a chapel which was dedicated to San Ildefonso, the patron saint of Alfonso XII, then the king of Spain. By 1877, the new name was assumed and a "tribunal" was created giving the place the status of a town. Fray Valentin Marin y Morales noted that the town was founded in 1886. The old church was demolished by a storm and a new one was built out of the materials donated by the Buenavista Estate. An incendiary bomb completely ruined the church during the Second World War. The present edifice was constructed through the efforts and contributions of the residents.YYY
