General Note
  • General note - The San Agustin Church in Intramuros is one of Philippine baroque churches included in the World Heritage List. Its cornerstone was laid in 1599, and its construction was completed in 1606 under the supervision of Augustinian Brother Antonio Herrera. During the British occupation in 1762, English Commander Draper ordered the floor of the church to be dug up, in search of buried treasure, thus profaning the graves of Legazpi, Urdaneta, Salcedo, de Goiti, Laverazes, and other Spanish conquistadors. Their ashes were later gathered and placed in the church''s easternmost chapel. (Source: Churches of Old Manila, O''Reilly, 1940) The facade is very Herrerian in style; simple and of the Spanish Renaissance. On it are the images of Saints Augustine and Paul. Four lions flank the finely carved door which is to the right of the monastery. Low arches run across the entire interior of the church, a mixture of Romanesque and Renaissance. Instead of the narrow aisles typical of many church interiors, San Agustin has side chapels. The faint light is received through lunettes of the clerestory as there is the conspicuous absence of windows. In the transept are two side altars, both ornately decorated with pillars with gilted capitals. Perhaps the greatest attraction of the church is the mural decoration rendered by Alveroni, the famous Italian painter. These figures are summarized just above the high altar. The adjoining monastery is old and architecturally stylish. Inside the walls is a gallery of old paintings of religious subjects. The beautifully contoured Blanco Garden lies at the middle of the complex.
