Title Statement
  • Title - San Sebastian Church
General Note
  • General note - Photo shows San Sebastian Church, located at Plaza del Carmen. This church of pure Gothic style is built entirely of metal, every inch of which was cast in Belgium by the Société Anonyme D'' Entreprises des Travaux Publics, and assembled here by the Recollect friars in 1890. (Source: Churches of Old Manila, O''Reilly, 1940) The church stands at the end of the old Calle Hidalgo and along C.M. Recto Avenue. An epitome of pure Gothic architecture in the Philippines, it is made entirely of iron brought over piece by piece from Belgium. It was assembled in this once aristocratic quarter of Manila according to the designs of Genaro Palacios, a native architect in 1891. The church, which was built on a high stone-platform, measures 55 meters long and 25 meters wide. A high nave and a roof that rests on pillars that reach up to the ceiling only to spread like fan ribs combine to make a majestic impression. While there are side aisles, transepts are conspicuously absent. The cupola is high, fine and well-lighted by clerestory windows. All windows are of stained glass brought in from Europe; twelve of them illustrate the life of Jesus Christ. An image of the Virgin of Carmen occupies the center of the high altar. Flanked by the statues of Saint Simon Scotus and Saint Teresa, it is right below the pinnacle bearing the image of Saint Sebastian. The Recollects earlier erected two other churches on this spot; both were destroyed by earthquakes (1859, 1880).YYY
