As we celebrate National Heritage Month and the 80th year since the end of World War II, the next Roderick Hall Memorial Lecture will continue to explore Filipino music in the shadow of war and cultural upheaval.

This event is presented by Filipinas Heritage Library with the support of the Hall family, Purefoods Deli, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The Roderick Hall Memorial Lectures are an annual lecture series to commemorate the longtime patron of Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL), Mr. Roderick Hall. Mr. Hall built The Roderick Hall Collection over the course of his lifetime. Each talk in the lecture series promotes a uniquely Filipino experience of World War II and how the legacy of the war continues to be felt in present times. FHL thanks the Hall family for their continued support.

Dr. Ramon P. Santos (National Artist for Music)
Speaker

Ramon Pagayon Santos is a celebrated composer, conductor, and musicologist in the country. He has contributed greatly to the quest for new directions in music, taking as basis non-Western traditions in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. He studied at the University of the Philippines and later pursued advanced studies and training in the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands where he assimilated various influences that helped shape his new style. His return to the Philippines marked a significant shift in his work, as he deepened his exploration of indigenous Philippine and Asian music and embarked on ethnomusicological research and fieldwork. As a professor and former Dean at the University of the Philippines College of Music, Santos has played a crucial role in educating and mentoring future generations, championing modern Filipino music rooted in traditional Asian practices.
