The Roderick Hall Memorial Lectures returns with “The Afterlives of Art: Problematising the Anti-War Message.”
Karl Ian Cheng Chua examines war art through picture diaries (e-nikki) and illustrating postcards (e-hagaki) created by Japanese soldiers and personnel stationed in the Philippines during World War II. Originally intended as private records or intimate messages to loved ones, these images have gained traction as families have chosen to publish their correspondence. Cheng Chua looks at the “afterlives” of these messages, re-viewing and critiquing their anti-war sentiments through a Filipino lens.
The Roderick Hall Memorial Lectures are an annual lecture series to commemorate the longtime patron of Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL), Mr. Roderick Hall. Mr. Hall built The Roderick Hall Collection over the course of his lifetime. Each talk in the lecture series promotes a uniquely Filipino experience of World War II and how the legacy of the war continues to be felt in present times.
