Study with master papermaker Asao Shimura in Likhang Papel. This workshop shows the use of Philippine plant fibers in Japanese papermaking. Exploring the link between creativity and nature, Shimura has decades-long experience with various techniques and Philippine plants. Filipinas Heritage Library and the Japan Foundation, Manila present the workshop as part of the Printed Word, a series on the history of the book, ongoing since 2014. Crafts enthusiasts and fine arts teachers are all welcome!

Asao Shimura
Facilitator 

Shimura grew up in Tokyo. Graduating from Tokyo Technical College in 1971, he studied industrial chemistry and water analysis. He travelled across Japan to learn its traditional papermaking and natural dyeing techniques. He began producing miniature books with a small platen press, under the Bunseido imprint. Over thirty handmade books on papermaking history and dyeing processes form his overall corpus. Based in Benguet, in the hills of Sitio Poking, Kapangan, he continues to practice his craft and to mentor aspiring papermakers. Shimura is also a member of the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists.

Francine Lima
Co-Facilitator 

Francine Lima, based in Metro Manila, specializes in book art and papermaking. Her art practice involves using natural fibers for handmade objects. After graduating from the UP Diliman College of Fine Arts, she studied under papermakers and bookbinders from the USA, India, Vietnam and Japan.
